Terms of Service

Agreement to terms

By accessing or using the et al. web application, browser extension, or any related services (collectively, the "Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Description of the Service

et al. is a research reference manager that lets users save, organize, and cite literary sources. The browser extension enables users to save sources from the web and insert and manage citations in Google Docs.

Accounts

You may need to create an account to use certain features. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. You agree to provide accurate information and to notify us promptly of any unauthorized use.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

• Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable law.
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of the Service.
• Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Service.
• Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service or its related systems.
• Use the Service to transmit malware or other harmful code.
• Scrape, crawl, or otherwise programmatically access the Service beyond normal use.

User content

You retain ownership of the content you upload or create through the Service (such as source metadata, PDFs, and citation data). By using the Service, you grant us a limited license to process, store, and display your content solely to provide and improve the Service.

Google API Services

Certain features of the Service integrate with Google APIs, including the Google Docs API. Your use of those features is also subject to the Google API Services Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. We access Google user data only as described in our Privacy Policy.

Intellectual property

The Service and its original content (excluding user content), features, and functionality are owned by et al. and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual-property laws.

Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without cause and with or without notice. You may stop using the Service or delete your account at any time. Upon termination, your right to use the Service ceases immediately.

Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, et al. and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising out of or related to your use of or inability to use the Service.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms on this page and updating the effective date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
